Privacy, in plain terms

407 FYI is a free guide with no accounts and nothing to sign up for. This page says exactly what leaves your device when you use it, and what never does.

The Short Version

We do not collect who you are

We don't run accounts and we don't collect your name, email, or phone number. There is no sign-up, no login, and no comment system anywhere in the guide.

If you email us a correction, we see the address you wrote from, because that is how email works. Nothing on the site itself asks you for personal details.

Analytics

What the counters see

We use PostHog to count how the guide is used: page views and taps, which places get opened, which outbound buttons get tapped, and the words typed into the finder's search box.

Search words are recorded as text, because a search for brunch and a search for wheelchair access tell us different things about what to fix first. Analytics runs without accounts, sets no advertising trackers, and is never sold or handed to an advertising network.

Crash Reports

When something breaks

Crash reports go through Sentry. They tell us what broke and on what kind of device, so we can fix it.

The reports are configured to carry no personal data: no names, no email addresses, no form entries, nothing you typed.

Other Servers

The map and the fonts

One part of the site loads files from another organization's servers, and any server that sends your device a file can see its internet address. It is named here rather than buried.

If you open the map view in the finder, the map tiles load from OpenStreetMap's servers. The site's web fonts are self-hosted: the font files load from this site's own server, so your browser does not contact a font service to display them.

If you use the finder's By vibe search, the phrase you type is sent to our own search service, which turns it into numbers and matches it against the guide's places to rank your results. The phrase answers that one search; it is not tied to who you are, because the guide never knows who you are.

If you measure distances from a place or address in the finder, what you type is sent to Photon, a search service built on OpenStreetMap data, to find the location you mean. The guide receives back coordinates for that one lookup and nothing about you.

Your Browser

What stays on your device

Your display preference, light or dark, and your finder filter settings are stored in your own browser so the guide remembers them between visits. They never leave your device.

If you tap "Near me," your location is used on your device to sort places by distance. It is not stored by us, not sent to our analytics, and not sold to anyone.

ChatFYI Help

Asking the guide

The chat on this site answers questions from the guide's own listings. These are the questions people ask about it most.

What can the chat help with? Places to eat and drink, coffee, things to do, neighborhoods, and occasions like date nights or family outings. It answers only from the guide's listings, and it cannot book, reserve, or buy anything.

Why won't it tell me opening hours? The guide does not list hours for any place, because hours change faster than a small guide can responsibly republish them. When you ask, the chat attaches the place's Google link, where the current hours and phone number live.

Why eight questions a day? The guide is in its soft opening, and the chat runs on a daily allowance while we find our feet. One thorough question, with the neighborhood, the occasion, and the mood in a single ask, gets a fuller answer than five quick ones. Your questions reset each day, and if you need more, write to [email protected] and a human will pick it up.

What happens to my questions? A question is sent to our own search service to find the matching places, and to an AI provider (Google's Gemini) to compose the answer. Questions and answers are kept in a log with no name or contact details attached, tied only to a random code stored in your browser, so we can see what people ask for and improve the guide. Please do not put personal details in the chat.

Are the chat's answers sponsored? No. The chat answers from the same listings as the rest of the guide. Nothing pays to be mentioned, listed, or ranked anywhere in 407 FYI, and that includes the Local Picks.

The chat got something wrong, or a place has closed. Tell us at [email protected]. Corrections from readers are how this guide stays honest.

Partner sites

Ticket, hotel, and dining buttons open partner sites, including Viator, GetYourGuide, Hotels.com, and inKind.

Once you leave 407 FYI, those sites run under their own privacy policies, not this one. Questions about anything on this page go to the same inbox as corrections: [email protected].
