The District

Brick Streets, Front Porch

Two blocks from the downtown towers, streets turn to brick and porches come out to greet you. Thornton Park is Orlando's front porch: bungalows under old oaks, a fountain on Washington Street, Lake Eola glittering at every block's end.

Southern, Finished Like Art

Soco is Southern cooking that went to finishing school: Greg Richie plates grilled meatloaf on lobster mashed potatoes under smoked onion gravy, and potato-chip chocolate cake with salted caramel to fight over. The patio watches Central Boulevard roll by.

The Local Test

The Stubborn Mule

Mules Cold Enough To Fog

Two Culinary Institute graduates opened this corner room in 2016 and built Thornton Park's measuring-stick bar: handcrafted mules cold enough to fog the copper, sticky pork belly, short rib grilled cheese. The patio fills first, understand why by sip two.

Run It Like a Local

Croissants To Wine Flights

Run it slow: Benjamin for croissants, a Lake Eola lap with the swans, vinyl and cold brew at Bynx. Evening is dinner at Maxine's or Soco, then a wine flight on Eola Wine's patio as the fountain lights.

Flashback · Orlando History

What happened to the Lake Eola swans?

They were rehomed in 2026. After an avian flu outbreak killed more than 30 birds, the city ended the century-old program and moved the remaining 44 swans ahead of a $60 million park renovation, so if the lake looks quieter, that's why.

The flock started with soap-opera drama: in 1910 an Englishman bought four swans for Lake Lucerne, including a royal mute swan named Billy (supposedly from King George's own Thames flock) who drowned his mate, chased cars, and nipped schoolchildren. After Billy feuded with the lake's black swans, a pair was moved to Lake Eola in 1922 and founded the flock.

Local note: downtown's most famous residents were British royalty with anger issues.
