The District

Steam First, No Apologies

Mills 50 does not ease you in. Steam first: pho broth rolling from kitchen doors, garlic and star anise over the sidewalk, bass leaking from a bar unchanged since the nineties. Immigrant kitchens, dive bars, band rooms, uninterested in impressing theme parks.

Banh Mi Boy

Baguettes That Shatter Right

Michelin gave it a Bib Gourmand, Netflix brought cameras, but Banh Mi Boy never changed its tune. Serving over twenty years, it bakes Saigon-style baguettes that shatter and sigh, loaded with crispy pork belly, garlic mayo and pâté.

Zaru

Udon Like A Craftsman

Zaru does one thing like a craftsman who never heard of shortcuts: Sanuki-style udon made in house from wheat shipped from Kagawa Prefecture, thick and bouncy. The Nikutama: noodles, seasoned beef, soft egg, is the bowl people cross town for. Slurp loudly.

Noodle Crawl, Then The Night

Flashback · Orlando History

Why is it called Mills 50?

It's literally the crossroads: Mills Avenue meets State Road 50 (Colonial Drive), and the neighborhood named itself after the intersection.

Starting in the late 1970s, Vietnamese refugees resettled through Catholic Charities established markets, bakeries, and pho shops there, and the area grew into "Little Saigon", one of Florida's most concentrated Vietnamese business districts.

Local note: you're eating in a neighborhood named after a street corner with a Little Saigon heart.
