The District

Old Soul, Oak Canopy

Morning light through live oaks, coffee on Park Avenue, lakes so still they double the sky. Founded as a winter retreat in the 1880s, Winter Park kept the manners and lost the stuffiness: galleries, markets and serious eating under the canopy.

The Pig Locals Name First

Ask a Winter Park local where to eat and watch their face change. James and Julie Petrakis built this gastropub into the restaurant that taught Orlando to take its food seriously, pig board, shrimp ’n grits, a joyful room.

Nine seats, all facing the knives. Kadence is a Michelin-starred omakase counter where the chefs work in near silence, handing over nigiri piece by piece: Hokkaido uni, fatty otoro, fish treated like scripture. No menu, you surrender, course after course.

Flashback · Orlando History

Why is it called Winter Park?

Because that's exactly what it was built to be.

Northern developers founded it in the 1880s as a winter resort, a park-like escape from northern winters. Before that the settlement went by Lake View, then Osceola, before somebody stated the obvious.

Local note: you're driving through a 140-year-old snowbird trap. It worked.

Were Winter Park's canals built for the boat tour?

No: they were logging ditches. The canals linking Lakes Maitland, Osceola, Virginia, Mizell, and Minnehaha were dug by hand in the late 19th century to float harvested logs to sawmills.

The Venetian Canal and Fern Canal still carry the Scenic Boat Tour, running since 1938, which once marketed Winter Park as "the Venice of America."

Local note: the prettiest boat ride in town started as industrial plumbing.
