The District

Skyline With A Heartbeat

Downtown is where Orlando clocks in, and somewhere along the way it learned to stay out late. Towers rise over a swan-filled lake, Church Street hums under string lights, kitchens cook for people who actually live here.

01 · Park

Lake Eola Park & Linton E. Allen Memorial Fountain

The Lake In Orlando's Dreams

Swans glide past paddle boats, the fountain throws light into the skyline, the 0.9-mile loop might be the city's most walked path. Come for a stroll, stay for an amphitheater concert, linger for the Sunday farmers market.

Kres Chophouse

Loop, Matinee, Nightcap

Locals run it in acts: the Eola loop before the heat, a Dr. Phillips matinee in the afternoon, Church Street as lights come on. Kres for dinner inside the 1930s Kress building, then Hanson's for the nightcap, get the password first.

Flashback · Orlando History

Does Lake Eola have two fountains?

Yes: and almost nobody notices the second one.

The famous fountain gets the photos, but the smaller Sperry Fountain has flowed in the southwest corner for over a century. It was funded by E.F. Sperry, Orlando's mayor in 1914, who donated the shoreline land to finish the park, and championed women's voting rights when that was still controversial.

Local note: walk the southwest corner of the lake and find the fountain everyone misses.

Why does downtown Orlando look frozen in the 1920s?

Because it nearly was. Florida's 1921-25 land boom inflated property values fivefold, and Orange County issued a $7 million bond in 1926 for 86 road projects. Then the bust came in 1926 (hurricanes, then the Depression) and building permits cratered from $8.3 million in 1926 to under $2 million by the end of 1927.

The towers that rose in the boom, the Angebilt, the San Juan, stood as the skyline for decades. The 1927 courthouse that now houses the Orange County Regional History Center is a surviving artifact of the boom's civic ambition.

Local note: the skyline you're looking at is a boom-time time capsule.
