The District

Florida Does Night Bigger

Every city has a street it shows off. Orlando's glows. International Drive started as a theme park support road, then refused its lane: dinner shows, sky wheels, upside-down houses, neon to read by. Locals joke about traffic, then drive over anyway.

Staying on the Drive for the parks? Read the I-Drive playbook: the corridor's ticket, toll and fee traps, what each one costs, and what to do instead.

Mango's Tropical Cafe

Dinner Becomes The Nightclub

Mango's rebuilt its South Beach Ocean Drive legend bigger on I-Drive: supper-club dining under live Latin music, dancers and handcrafted cocktails, then the whole building becomes the nightclub. Dinner, a show and a dance floor were never separate plans here.

Flashback · Orlando History

Was the water park invented on International Drive?

Basically, yes. Wet 'n Wild debuted on I-Drive on March 13, 1977, founded by SeaWorld creator George Millay, who quit SeaWorld to build it. Most industry experts consider it the first true water park: the first to combine wave pools, slides, and splash zones in one place.

Disney's River Country debuted a year earlier, but Wet 'n Wild defined the formula. It ran 39 years before closing to make way for Volcano Bay.

Local note: every water park on this road is a cover version of the original.

The Convention Center Tourists Paid For

The Orange County Convention Center opened in February 1983, with the Boston Pops playing its grand opening. It was funded by a 2% tax on hotel rooms that county voters approved in 1978. Visitors literally paid for the building. Today it's the second-largest convention center in the country, with more than 110 hotels within three miles of it.
