The District

Grit, Dairy, Great Sandwiches

The Milk District got its name honestly: the T.G. Lee dairy plant anchoring Robinson Street for a century, its mural cow watching. Around it grew Orlando at its grittiest and tastiest, blocks where sandwich counters have lines and brewers pour nearby.

Beefy King

Defend It In A Fistfight

Every city has a sandwich shop its people would defend. Orlando's is Beefy King. Since 1968 the Bumby Avenue counter has steamed roast beef onto soft kaiser rolls, Beefy Spuds alongside. It survived an arson fire and came back swinging.

Se7en Bites

Pie Hole, Filled Properly

A spa-industry veteran followed her grandmother's recipes to culinary school and opened Se7en Bites: Triple D, a Michelin nod, a line out the door. The chicken pot pie emerges at 11 and vanishes; the Bourbon Bacon Moon Pie is legend.

Flashback · Orlando History

Why is it called the Milk District?

Because of a dairy. The T.G. Lee Dairy plant was founded in 1925, and founder Thomas Gilbert Lee started with a single cow producing milk for Central Florida.

The plant still stands as the district's landmark, and the strip of independent shops and bars around it picked up the nickname. A whole nightlife district, named after one cow.

Local note: one cow. That's the whole origin story.
